First-Time Officiant Tips
A quick guide for a friend or family member officiating a wedding.
Thank you for helping create a meaningful ceremony! These simple reminders will help things run smoothly so you can enjoy the moment, too.
Before the ceremony
Check in with the DJ about 15 minutes before the start
When Bedrock is providing ceremony audio, your DJ will fit your lapel microphone and handle the sound levels. The transmitter can clip to a belt, sit in a pocket, or attach to your book or clipboard.
Confirm the exact recessional cue
Share the final words or action before the couple walks back down the aisle. The cue may come after the kiss and the introduction of the couple. Send your script in advance to info@bedrockdjs.com, with the couple’s names and wedding date.
Welcome guests and set expectations
Before the entrances, ask everyone to silence their phones. If the couple wants an unplugged ceremony, ask guests to put phones and cameras away. You could say:
“Please silence anything that rings, dings, or buzzes so you can be fully present as we watch ___ and ___ get married.”
During the ceremony
Remember “Please rise” and “Please be seated”
Confirm with the couple when guests should stand for the entrance. Once the couple is in place, invite everyone to sit.
Help the couple focus on each other
Gently remind them to face each other, especially during the vows. Speak at a comfortable pace and leave room for laughter, emotion, and a deep breath.
Step aside for the kiss
As you invite the couple to kiss, move out of the space between them so the photographer has a clear view.
Wrapping things up
Give the couple a moment
Remind them beforehand: after the final words or action, turn toward the guests, smile, and pause for a few seconds before walking. Let the music start, give the photographer time, and enjoy the cheers!
Tell guests what’s next
After the couple and wedding party walk back down the aisle, the DJ can lower the music for your announcement. Explain where guests should go and whether there’s a receiving line. End with, “Thank you for celebrating with us—enjoy the evening!”
